  • Pedal for Kids

In an effort of solidarity in helping to raise funds for Pedal For Kids, a biking event has been created that will be taking place from Monday, August 31, 2020 to Tuesday, September 15, 2020. If you enjoy cycling, you can participate in the biking event by obtaining sponsorship from a family member, a supervisor, or a friend. You can cycle to work or anywhere you wish during this period and help to raise funds for Pedal for Kids. You and your sponsor can discuss how you will be sponsored, i.e. 1$/km, 10$/ ride and etc. Any funds that you raise can be transferred to this link: https://fondationduchildren.com/en/fundraising/research-in-action-2020 The traditional fundraising event for Pedal For Kids 2020 has been modified in light of the COVID-19 pandemic with the unfortunate cancellation of the Mighty Bike event that rides the streets of downtown Montreal. On Sunday, September 26, 2020, a PFK Drive-In Movie Experience will be held to celebrate the fundraising efforts of all Pedal for Kids cycling participants.  Participants may attend the drive-In movie experience with their fellow teammates or friends to celebrate their fundraising success! If you would like to participate in the biking event, please send me an email with your name, and the name of your sponsors. (myriam.talantikit@mail.mcgill.ca)

April 3, 2019 Questions asked to Bruce Mazer 1. If PIs have resources or ideas for the COVID-19 task force, who should they contact? 2. Should the recently implemented (March 27, 2020) RESP Program directives and disinfection instructions be extended to all programs? 3. COVID-19 Volunteers (Updated answer April 7th, 2020) Programs have collected lists of volunteers who would like to give their time to conduct COVID-19 testing. In addition, we have received emails and bulletins asking us to encourage students and research staff to volunteer their time to help with COVID-19 testing and diagnostics. However, should we be promoting these efforts if students and staff are being encouraged to stay home and work from home? Students, in particular, are a concern as the Faculty of Medicine has made it clear that students should not be on lab sites unless absolutely necessary. A secondary issue are PIs who are asking why they should pay their research staff to work in places such as the Biobank without receiving any compensation, especially considering COVID-19 project funding is available. 4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) The increased number of new articles (https://nationalpost.com/pmn/news-pmn/canada-news-pmn/quebec-warns-of-possible-equipment-shortage-as-covid-19-cases-soar-above-4000) has reinvigorated the desire for labs and researchers to donate PPE. However, in yesterday’s press conference by Premier Francois Legault he indicated PPEs will be coming from other provinces and countries, and that Quebec businesses will be supplying PPEs very soon. The original file circulated from MEES in mid-March has been used by some of our programs to collect information. At this point it might be a good idea to have a coordinated RI-MUHC directive and effort (even if RI-MUHC donated PPE is prioritized for MUHC use). Some of our PIs would like to donate masks, glove, gowns, etc. and will send lab members into the lab to count these items if given a reason to. PIs have also reached out to McGill directly in response to a call from Dr. Shari Baum a few weeks ago, and were (politely) informed to coordinate with the RI-MUHC. Should we (the PMs) be establishing a relationship with the MUHC Procurement Division to redirect the PPE that labs are interested in donating? *Additional Info on PPE not asked* There is a CRM to this form which will help sort through the donations. This effort was supervised by Dr. Don Sheppard, Dr. Clair Trottier, Dr. Jerry Zaharatos in an effort to streamline the donation efforts. https://forms.gle/kMqMTtajpxdKfTam6 Current Responses (Updated April 7, 2020) 1. If PIs have resources or ideas for the COVID-19 task force, who should they contact? Which COVID task force? Via MUHC? I have been the conduit to Dr Gfeller and his team so send the ideas my way and I can forward them to the appropriate MUHC person. 2. Should the recently implemented (March 27, 2020) RESP Program directives and disinfection instructions be extended to all programs? It is up to the discretion of each program. This was a group Resp program decision for the labs. I think that our guidelines have achieved a very large decrease in activity and this is a reinforcement of the policies of the RI and the student policies of McGill 3. COVID-19 Volunteers: Students: I have asked McGill Faculty of Medicine about students wanting to volunteer. They will reply to me later today. For now, we are not targeting students PIs: who would want a rebate on their tech's salary for contributing time to the biobank effort rather than paying them to stay home, it's clear that we have made this request out of community spirit to develop a resource for the whole RI and to assist the provincial program. There are no extra resources for salary. This is completely voluntary and I would hope our investigators would understand this complex and time-dependent situation April 7, 2020 - We can allow students who are trained in level 2 or 2+ and are approved by their supervisors. No one who does not have the skillset already can apply for working with blood. We may also have those who want to work as recruiters if they have this expertise, this may be allowed. Most of the recruiting will be done at a distance, I believe -Students are adults and free to do other activities in their free time and to work up to 10-12 hours per week outside of their research programs.  Problems could arise if they start working more hours is that supervisors will want to take them off their stipend. 4. Material and MUHC: They have only asked for N95 masks to date and are really mostly working with the MSSS suppliers. It would not be that useful to interact directly with them, as they are not really responding except when 100% needed. They are a bit stretched, to say the least. I am in contact and will keep you posted if there is any requests. 1.    Tonight (Thursday, March 19), 11 pm, is the deadline to ramp down research activities on campus.  If you need to request an exemption and have not yet done so, this is also the deadline for requests. (See https://www.mcgill.ca/medresearch/about/special-notices-covid-19-research-updates.  We have also added an FAQ page to our website: https://www.mcgill.ca/medresearch/about/special-notices-covid-19-research-updates/faq.) 2.    Please be aware that, if you or your students or staff currently have authorization to access specific buildings after normal working hours, your access will be maintained; make sure you have your ID cards on hand at all times.  All buildings will be accessible only by card reader.   3.    For on-campus deliveries, departments have identified individuals who will be responsible for coordinating incoming deliveries of common supplies, to be overseen by Dr. Carmen Lampron of the Faculty’s Building Director’s Office.  Orders should be limited to an absolute minimum; if you place an order, ensure delivery is scheduled for a specific time when someone authorized from your lab is available to receive it.      (Note that Procurement Services has notified all vendors of the University’s closure and these special arrangements.  This is the information we received Wednesday, March 18:  “Following yesterday’s general communication to McGill University, and the subsequent feedback from suppliers (see below), we encourage each of you who are issuing new purchase orders or currently have open / outstanding purchase orders, to proactively contact the suppliers and inform them of your ability to receive the goods or services, or to make arrangements for postponement***. For instance, some labs continue to function in buildings that are otherwise temporarily closed, and unless deliveries are coordinated, the couriers are unable to enter the buildings and deliver to the labs. ***Your specific communications regarding ongoing service or delivery order contracts, whether to reinforce continuation of service or suspension of contractual activities, should be transmitted to the suppliers as soon as possible, copying your buyer on your email whenever possible.  Should you encounter issues, please contact us at feedback.purchasing@mcgill.ca. 4.    The VPRI’s office is working remotely.  They are also developing an FAQ page and will let us know when it is active.  Importantly, the VPRI, in coordination with the U15 committee, is in contact with all federal funding councils to discuss potential changes to deadlines, flexibility in funding end-dates and possible extensions to funding, should competitions be delayed.  A postponement of the upcoming NFRF LOI deadline is still under discussion.  5.    Please note that the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services is looking for equipment that universities might be able to spare: masks, visors, gloves, gowns, disinfectant gel.  Should you happen to have any available, please let us know and we will contact the relevant people.
